A lot of sources seem to indicate it's legit, while others doubt it. This was apparently just before WWII, Pearl Harbor, and the US entering WWII. From accounts in the article, she may have died under Japanese custody. I can't imagine how concerning that must have been, being isolated far from home, and those that know you, in a foreign land, and probably not knowing the language.
